05:38 am - BRAINS and Lecithin
Below is part of a thread on Coconut oil list.   I responded to someone who was freaked out because Lecithin is made from Soy, and Soy is a big no-no for most health conscious people, unless it is fermented, like Miso.

> I use lecithin because with all the "mad cow" furor going on, I can no
> longer obtain brains to eat.  The folks at whole foods do not seem to
> realize that "Mad Cow" comes from animals which have been fed raw meat
> scraps.   But the meat sold at Whole Foods are fed a strictly
> vegetarian diet, so the danger of "Mad Cow" is not existent.

Was your last line being sarcastic or what? I thought I understood all this and could make sense of it, but your last couple of sentences did lose me a bit..... So I thought I would ask for clarification.

What did you used to eat the brains to obtain? Are you saying that soy lecithin replaces that for you now?  What is your purpose in consuming it?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I probably should have explained myself more in depth, but I was in a hurry.

Back when I was a kid (7th grade) my IQ tested at 114.  A relative told me that I would have a hard time in college "unless I somehow got smarter".

One day, when I went with my mother to the butcher, I saw pig brains in the display case.   I liked them because I was into monster movies.  I liked being a gross kid and eating brains seemed right up my alley!  But I also figured that if I ate brains, I might get smarter.   So I asked my mother to buy me some brains.

She had no clue how to prepare brain, so she did not want to buy me any.   The butcher overheard my mother and told her how to cook brain.   She bought one small brain.   She figured I would not want to eat it.   But she was wrong.   I loved brains!    So I got brains 2 or 3 times a month from then until I left home to go to college.

When I was a junior in highschool, my IQ got tested again.   My IQ was over 140.

I sure have no idea if eating brains made me smarter, but I can think of no other dietary changes which might have made me smarter. Read more... )

04:10 am - The America We Never Seem to Talk About (Photo Essay)
        Below link nipped from [info]nebris.

When looking at the photos on the site below, keep in mind that the people photographed are working poor, meaning they have jobs.   They are not homeless.   They work for a living.   Makes me wonder how the bosses and owners of the place these women are employed live.

The US is supposed to be the wealthiest nation on earth.  But the upper 1% control 90% of that wealth and the poor are very very poor.

Seems to me it is time to bring back public executions to level the playing field.

Below from Shade on HML list.

=======================

Neil Gaiman

I imagine many people here know Neil Gaiman from the brilliant comix series Sandman (and many others), or his novels Neverwhere (also a Brit TV series), Stardust (also a movie), American Gods, or Anansi Boys, or his short story collections. There is also the film Mirrormask (see it!) However, he also writes for children and that wondrous demographic known as Young Adults, with Coraline (soon to be a movie)...

...and his latest, The Graveyard Book, which I just finished and really loved. It is a wonderful riff on myths, monsters and fairy tales (with a little Lovecraft tossed in) and I highly recommend it, even if Halloween is just over. Indeed, it can stand right next to Roger Zelazny's masterpiece A Night in the Lonesome October, as far as I am concerned (some people leave the Xmas lights up all year, but it is always Halloween in my heart). Try your local library...

02:45 am - Another ridiculous post Katrina happening
        Below from C_3 list.

Since Katrina, I have not managed to save more than $500, and the savings go away during slow periods.   Before Katrina, I had close to $4000 in savings.   So if I were trying for one of the Habitat for Humanity homes, I would be shit out of luck.

===========================

JACKSON, Miss. -- Habitat for Humanity had a mission to build hundreds of homes during a spring blitz to help people pushed into poverty after Hurricane Katrina.

Many of the dozens of completed houses in Texas, Louisiana and Alabama are occupied or will soon be dedicated. But in Mississippi, only six of the 30 homes are filled.

Chris Monforton with Habitat for Humanity of the Mississippi Gulf Coast said potential homeowners are having a hard time meeting the program's requirement. They must save about $3,500 in an escrow account for a year's worth of taxes and insurance

Since Katrina, insurance rates along the Gulf Coast have increased about 33 percent in some areas, depending on how close a property is to the water.

02:39 am - I Need a Really Fuckin Ugly userpic of Biden!
Below from Grackle list. URL at end for full story.

==========================

Biden's lobbyist chief of staff

"After leaving the Clinton administration in its waning months, newly tapped Vice Presidential chief of staff Ron Klain lobbied for an asbestos industry bailout package, an airline merger, mortgage regulations to help Fannie Mae and a drug-maker under congressional scrutiny for withholding life-saving drugs from dying patients, among other clients.

"Klain's career as a lobbyist, during which clients paid nearly $700,000 for lobbying in which he participated, ended when he left his partnership at the law firm O'Melveny & Myers in 2005.

"That makes him eligible to be the top aide to Vice President-elect Joe Biden under the rules outlined by President-elect Barack Obama, who decreed early in his campaign that lobbyists can work in his administration - just not in areas related to their lobbying within two years of that lobbying."

The military has developed honeycomb tires for Humvees. I can see how they might be practical for bikes too. (Okay, all vehicles, but especially those where a blow-out has particularly bad consequences.)

12:22 am - Book #50--GOAL!!!!
Photobucket

Book #50
Book Title: Cloud Nine
Author: Luanne Rice
Category: fiction; romance; chick lit
# of pages: 368
My rating of the book, F- [worst] to A [best].: A
Short description/summary of the book: (taken from amazon.com):Thirty-seven-year-old Sarah Talbot's lengthy battle with cancer forced her to put life on hold. But a clean bill of health has given her a second chance and she's not about to take anything for granted. Intent on living life to the fullest, Sarah reopens her bedding shop, aptly named Cloud 9, and plans a trip to Elk Island, a tiny island off the coast of Maine, where her unfeeling father and runaway son wait. Family reconciliation has long been her heart's desire, and Sarah knows that now is the time to mend familial fences. On the short plane ride to the island, she finds an unexpected confidant in pilot Will Burke, whose own personal demons make him the perfect conversation partner--and so much more. As Sarah struggles to communicate with the father she left behind and a son troubled by his own father's death--and his mother's illness--she takes refuge in the arms of Will and discovers a love she never thought possible, a love that will sustain the two in this life and beyond. Both beautifully written and well plotted, Cloud Nine is a moving testament to the eternal power of love.

My Thoughts: WOW! This was such a great book to end my goal with! This was such a wonderful story of love and hope. This is probably the best Luanne Rice book I have read thus far. It was such a unique love story that I think fans of Luanne Rice and similar authors will appreciate.

Books read this year: 50/50. I'm 100% done! I finally made my goal!!!!

Next read(s): I think I am going to read another Luanne Rice book next.

09:28 pm - tech/internet nerd question
So our internet (qwest dsl) was sucking it up (freezing on image/data heavy pages like myspace, randomly losing the connection and taking anywhere from 30 seconds to a couples minutes to stop searching, etc).
We moved it out of my roommate's room down to the living room hook up. It was immediately noticeably faster and the main two issues mentioned above seemed to be solved. Then, after a few hours of working fine, the connection completely stopped. After talking to qwest's help line for entirely too long, they said the port wasn't active and that we needed to move it back to the original (and it appears only) working line in the house. I asked if there was a way for them to set up that port for me, she referred me to the main office to ask on pricing tomorrow.

So I guess my questions are why would it work better downstairs (and it's not proximity as we moved it further from my desktop pc and it worked better, as did my macbook which was unchanged with how close I was to the router prior to the switch)? Was it a fluke or would it be worth getting that line active?

Is it really something I need to get qwest out for or is it something I can get a 3rd party or a particularly tech-smart friend out for that won't charge up the ass?

So today was a pretty good day. Max and I gave a demo of the system we've been to one of the big managers and he loved it. Rockin awesome. I came home early and kicked it for a while before walking to the bank and then going to Longs. While I was in Longs buying my pomegranate rock star (love those) Dylan called me and wanted to go to IN-N-OUT. Score! So we met up, rocked out the gay and he took me for a ride (not that kind) in Magnus. I really wanna buy one now. Except mine is gonna have GPS. Who the fuck gets a new car without GPS? Lame. Anyways, I came home smelling of Magnus' signature scent.

I don't think I'll ever be able to get this smell off.
